Saying
goodbye is never easy for anyone. Especially for
children. Death and funerals are a
mystery for most children and it is quite common for a child to become
baffled and unsettled when explanations are not given and questions go
unanswered. It is equally unsettling for adults to explain to a
child, why a close member of the family, such as a father or a mother,
has died. There are many ways to help children cope with death.
One of the most successful is to make the child an integral part of
all aspects of the arrangements. That way they know what happens
at a funeral and the questions just come pouring out once trust has
been established. We are especially proud of the fine selection
of books we have assembled for children from early ears to teenagers.
They have been written by many of the best authors on the subject.
Most are beautifully illustrated. Our collection has proven to
be the most remarkable learning tool for both the parent and the
child. We also have videos explaining death and funerals.
Our adults and children's library has been carefully selected to be
one of the most comprehensive collections to be found anywhere.
We will be pleased to lend the books or videos you need.
Whatever the subject, there is a book that will explain your specific
questions, about death, cremation, burial, or funerals, in easy to
read and understandable language.
Many find comfort and help in support from their peers and we offer
connections to all of the Grief Recovery programs available.
A
new service is the newsletter we provide, keeping everyone up to date
in the Care Giving Community as well as those experiencing
bereavement.
In
addition to our lending library and video library, we have a selection
of brochures that are also available at 'no cost'. It is
difficult to single out one brochure or pamphlet over another, as all
have been selected as the best we could find on the subject.
"Helping Children Understand Death" with forward by Ernie Coombs,
CBC's Mr. Dress-Up, is so skillfully written that even the very young
can be helped to understand and accept death in a meaningful way.
The title Good-Bye Gramma says it all. This is among one of our
most requested booklets. The line drawings encourage the
youngster to color and become involved in the story line.
For adults we have a varied selection of books and videos available
